Centered on the theme “Wildlife Have the Rights,” this Karen-language Thoolei Kawwei Magazine highlights the relationship between Indigenous Karen communities, wildlife, forests, rivers, and traditional knowledge. Through stories from local communities, environmentalists, and traditional knowledge holders, readers will find updates on Indigenous Karen conserved territories, the cultural and ecological importance of the Salween River, reflections on wildlife conservation, seed sovereignty, the dangers of mercury contamination, and social issues affecting local communities. Feature articles examine the global lessons of Minamata disease and the life, international conservation status, and the Kawthoolei Forestry Department’s protection of wild water buffalo, while interviews with Karen forestry and conservation leaders offer perspectives on safeguarding forests and biodiversity.
The magazine also highlights Karen cultural heritage through traditional herbal medicine knowledge, a folktale about the origin of the gaur, and poems dedicated to environmental conservation and the Salween Peace Park.
