Networking and advocacy campaign
In order to effectively advocate for environmental justice, Indigenous rights, and inclusive natural resource governance policies, KESAN is active in numerous networks through lobbying, public events, knowledge exchange, and media engagement.
Karen Peace Support Network
With the collaboration of 30 Karen organizations under KPSN, we advocate for genuine and sustainable peace, social and political justice and equality and the establishment of a Federal Democracy that recognizes the rights and roles of Indigenous people in governance.
Karen Rivers Watch (KRW)
Through a coalition with other four Karen Civil Society grassroots organizations in KRW, we monitor development processes affecting the environment, especially rivers. KRW mobilizes grassroots communities, as well as advocates alongside different ethnic nationalities in Burma for democratic and sustainable development.
Conservation Alliance Tanawthari (CAT)
In partnership with other Karen community organizations in the Tanintharyi region in lower Burma, the CAT network promotes conservation of biodiversity together with local people, and protect the rights of Indigenous communities as opposed to promoting top down conservation models.
Burma Environmental Working Group (BEWG)
With other ethnic environmental and social organizations in different parts of Burma, this network monitors Burma development policy and advocates for alternative development policies meeting the specific traditional and comprehensive understanding of local sustainability. BEWG provides a forum for member organizations to combine the successes, knowledge, expertise and voices of ethnic peoples in pursuit of not just local livelihoods, but sustainable and peaceful national, regional and international development policy. Members collaborate on research, reporting, advocacy campaigns, capacity-building initiatives and policy formulation.
ICCA Consortium
The Association ICCA Consortium is established to promote the appropriate recognition of, and support to, indigenous peoples’ and community conserved areas and territories (ICCAs) at local, national and international levels. Through the ICCA Consortium, KESAN shares knowledge and experience from Indigenous Karen people and advocates for the local and international recognition of the customary governance and management rules, institutions and practices of the Indigenous peoples and communities.
