Environmental magazine
KESAN’s Karen language environmental magazine, locally known as Thoolei Kawwei, has served as a forum for discussion of environmental and social issues of relevance to Karen communities and community leaders for over two decades. The magazine publishes contributions from various writers from local communities, local leaders and KESAN staff.
It includes up-to-date culturally and locally relevant news, feature pieces, opinion pieces, input from community members, Karen Hta (poems), herbal medicine information, and sometimes quizzes and competitions. The goal of the magazine is to educate, promote Karen’s traditional knowledge, and advocate for environmental conservation. KESAN works with schools and the Karen Education and Culture Department (KECD) to distribute Thulei Kawwei to refugee camps, and works with local field staff, community leaders, KFD, and education department representatives to distribute the magazine to communities in Kawthoolei. This magazine is vital because local communities that will be most heavily affected by large scale development projects tend to have the least access to information.
