No Coal campaign
Carbon pollution from burning coal causes damage to health, livelihoods, and environment in nearby communities. It is a major contributor to the crisis of global warming, and is also destroying valuable forest carbon sinks. In response to existing and the proposed coal mines and coal powered factories in Karen State, KESAN works with local communities and civil society to advocate for no coal projects in Karen State.
This includes advocacy work, supporting local protests, and supporting community monitoring and documentation.

Karen communities near Hpa-An town have been facing contaminated water since October 2019, which they believe is a result of a coal-fired cement factory’s operations. The villagers first attempted to work with Kayin State Government agencies to find a way to address this situation, but the problem has not been resolved.
