The 10th of November has been declared the International Indigenous Heroes Day dedicated to honoring and remembering the courage of indigenous heroes around the world who stood firm and made …sacrifices to protect their peopleโs rights to land, natural resources and their culture.
Celebrating this day serves to remind all of us around the world of the grave challenges that indigenous communities continue to face today. These include the loss of land and resources, human rights violations and the wide range of pressures to alter or abandon their cultural practices.
The remembrance day for Indigenous Heroes also provides a significant opportunity to advocate for the protection and support of indigenous peopleโs human rights and their specific rights as Indigenous peoples. In 2024, Burma, particularly (Kawthoolei), has been hit hard by a series of natural disasters, including storms, irregular rainfall, record floods, droughts, and disease outbreaks affecting both humans and animals. …The districts of Doo Tha Htoo, Taw Oo, Mutraw, and Hpa-an have experienced significant crop destruction due to heavy rains, flooding, and increased pest populations, which have particularly impacted young rice crops planted since mid-August. These challenges are expected to lead to food security issues in many communities in the coming year.
In response, KESAN plans to work with district leaders to implement a summer rice cultivation program aimed at alleviating the crisis. Given the widespread difficulties in Kawthoolei, collaboration between the KNU and Karen civil society groups is crucial to developing effective solutions to support the affected communities.[+] Show More

Orchid : Natural Wonders with Multifaced Value | This video is about the research conducted from 2012 to 2016 by KESAN’s womenโs research team in collaboration with local women’s …groups in the Salween Peace Park. The research combined scientific knowledge with indigenous wisdom to study orchids in the Kaw Thoo Lei region, leading to the discovery of 121 orchid species, many of which are protected under international conservation laws (CITES). The study also uncovered the deep cultural and ecological connections between orchids and the indigenous Karen people. Certain orchids, such as Thunia alba and Dendrobium cariniferum, serve as seasonal indicators and are closely linked to the Karen people’s farming practices and spiritual beliefs.
