Youth Get Involved in the Water and Food Sovereignty Sphere
Under the pretext of Myanmar’s development, the Salween River has become a hot spot for profit-seeking investors. Their efforts continue without consideration of the future impacts that the projects will have on the locals who live within the Salween River Basin.
These Young people are from 9 villages located downstream of several proposed development project on the Salween River, in an area itself threatened by a wide variety of different projects. A 5-day youth camp brought them together to share about the problems and concerns they have related to the water and other parts of the Salween River Basin they depend on. The youth also had an opportunity to learn more about how political, economic and development trends link with water and food sovereignty. The awareness raising, group discussion and field trip helped these young people not only gain the knowledge, but build their interpersonal skills too.
During the course of the youth camp they created a network of peers to work together on water conservation and food sovereignty. These brave and enthusiastic young people are playing their part to help solve environmental problems that happening around the world by starting in their communities.
