In Taw-Oo District of Kawthoolei in Eastern Burma, there are many sub Karen ethnic groups. There are famous and beautiful legendary mountains and forests. The Karen indigenous people here have their own traditions that help preserve the natural environment, for example, by protecting forests and watersheds. However, numerous threats, including the Burma Government’s land laws, the establishment of new protected forests, mega-development projects, such as road and dam construction, and the expansion of the Burma Government’s administrative areas, endanger the lives of these Indigenous peoples’ and disrupt their customary natural resource management. In response to this, the leaders and people of Taw-Oo District have sought a way to protect their land and natural resources.
