The place is called Shwe Oo Wei as well as Taung Kyar. It is the place where the planned Hatgyi Dam will be built. There are several dams planned on the Salween River by governments and companies from Burma, Thailand and China. One of these is Hatgyi, to be built in Karen State. Although the Karen people will suffer the effects of the Hatgyi dam, including displacement, loss of livelihood, and increased poverty, about 90% of the electricity will be sold to China and Thailand. Only 10% will be for Burma/Myanmar, and how much of this will be for the Karen is unclear. For this reason, KRW and local people gathered to commemorate the International Day of Action for Rivers and Against Dams to demonstrate their opposition to the Hatgyi dam and other Salween dams. A local woman said, “We do not want to leave our homes and live somewhere else. We love living in our own village. This dam will destroy our homeland.” During the event, the KRW and local people delivered the following messages for the dam developers and investors. -EGAT Company (Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand), we do not welcome you! -IGE Company (International Group of Entrepreneurs Company) we do not welcome you! -Chinese Company, we do not welcome you! -Salween River is our life. -Salween Dam, stop it!
