KESAN is part of a coalition of 24 indigenous rights organizations that has made a joint submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Burma’s human rights record. Burma will be reviewed in the 23rd Session of the UPR Working Group of the Human Rights Council, coming up this November 2015.

The joint submission focuses on land, territory & natural resources, development, and language & cultural rights, and also urges official recognition of Burma’s indigenous peoples. It emphasizes how the Burma government’s attempt to control land and resources in Indigenous territories is driving violent conflict and human rights violations. It shows how militarization in Burma is not only a safety issue, but actually prevents Indigenous peoples from practicing and passing on their cultural traditions.
