Recently, the Indigenous Karen people of the Salween River Basin have taken another step towards fulfilling this vision. The Indigenous Karen people in the Salween Peace are working with the Kawthoolei Forestry Department (KFD), and the Karen Environmental and Social Action Network (KESAN), to make a team of community forest rangers. The participants have already undergone ranger training and have begun their work in the Salween river basin. This team, composed of ten local villagers, is the first community forest ranger unit to operate in the eastern part of the Salween Peace Park, Salween Basin, Butho Township.
