For many generations, the Karen people have communicated with each other by reciting poems. To ask for food or water or for permission to stay overnight at someone's house, the elders use poems to communicate. In the past, there was a saying that visitors will go hungry if they don't know how to communicate through these traditional poems when they come to Karen villages. From generation to generation, Karen traditional beliefs and knowledge have guided the Karen people in their daily lives. "Indigenous Karen Folk Tales" compiles many traditional Karen stories that have been handed down from generation to generation. These stories were told by elders to their children and grandchildren to teach these generations about the traditional Karen beliefs and knowledge that guide their livelihoods, culture, lives and preservation of the environment.
